Jane Iredale created the term mineral makeup and is the face of Jane Iredale Cosmetics. This beauty expert has a background in film, television and geology. An inspiring business woman making women everywhere feel good about themselves, Jane Iredale has created a cosmetics range that is both pure and good for the skin.

We interviewed the woman behind the brand, Jane Iredale:

B&L: What makes Jane Iredale Cosmetics so different?
 
Jane: It’s the perfect combination of a makeup that makes the skin look beautiful and flawless and is good for the skin. We tested all our products for comedogencity and sensitivity and were perfectly clear on both.  

We believe our difference comes from our intention to create a makeup that’s good for the skin as well as beautiful. We place a great importance of finding the best possible ingredients so that we know that the end product will be top of the line.  No compromises.    

B&L: Why should we be using mineral cosmetics on our skin?
 
Jane: If you want a makeup that makes the skin look flawless without feeling heavy and looking cakey then mineral makeup is for you.  A good mineral makeup will also give UVB/UVA protection, although it’s important to check the label to see if it has a rating.  

A true mineral makeup allows the skin to breathe and function normally and usually contains antioxidants to keep the skin protected all day.  Mineral makeup will also last on the skin longer than traditional makeup.

B&L: How did you get started?
 
Jane: I started in 1994 with six loose mineral powder colors.  My first customer was a spa.  From there word of mouth spread and that is still the way most people find out about our line.  It built a good and loyal customer base.
 
B&L: How do you choose which products you want to create?
 
Jane: Because our line is so complete now, I create things that I feel would make a woman’s life easier.  I also listen to our customers who share their wants and needs with me.  Sometimes a fantastic ingredient comes along and I think:  “Hmmm, I have to create something so that we can use that.” Creating products is the fun part of my job.

B&L: Who is a "Jane Iredale" woman?
 
Jane: I think the ‘Jane Iredale’ woman is the woman who has just had an A-Ha moment.  What I mean by this is something that happens in her life that sets her thinking outside of the box. For instance, when a woman becomes pregnant and she begins to think about the toxins in her body. Or the day she wakes up and finds her first wrinkle and realizes that she has to begin to take care of her skin.  Or the teenager who suddenly understands that what she’s putting on her skin may be having an effect on her acne.  Or even a recommendation from a friend.  So really it’s the woman who is suddenly driven by curiosity.
 
B&L: Tell us what you love most about your career...
 
Jane: I love the communications I get from women telling me how our products have changed their lives.  And I love the fact that our company is an inspiration for other women who are considering starting out on their own.

B&L: Is there anything you would have done differently?
 
Jane: I feel amazingly fortunate that I’ve always found people to give me the right advice and that my mother taught me to listen to them.  So I can’t think of anything that I would change much.

B&L: If you could only have one makeup item in your handbag what would it be?
 
Jane: My PurePressed Base in Warm Sienna.

B&L: What's next for Jane Iredale?
 
Jane: We want to continue on our same path while we explore the new technology that’s available to us now.  I see that as the most exciting promise of the cosmetic future.

B&L: What does being a woman mean to you?
 
Jane: I wish I had some pat answer for this but I don’t.  I still see women trying to be everything to everyone while they juggle family and a career. I’m no exception.  I do honestly believe that if the running of this world were in the hands of women, we wouldn’t be in anything like the trouble we’re in now.
