Why
is Pilates a Great Way to Wake Up Your Body?
By Sue Steinhauer, Senior Instructor, Pilates Unlimited, Takapuna
and competitive Triathlete.
The Pilates philosophy focuses on training the mind and body to
work together toward the goal of overall fitness. Its rising popularity
reflects the tremendous surge in the mind-body movement in recent
years.
The Pilates Method was developed more than 70 years ago by Joseph
H. Pilates.
The Pilates Method of body conditioning is a unique system of about
500 stretching and strengthening exercises done either with Pilates
apparatus or on a floor mat. It strengthens and tones muscles, improves
posture, provides flexibility and balance, unites body and mind
and creates a more streamlined shape.
Many of the old exercise regimes of the 1980s have proved to be
imbalanced, inefficient exercises that isolate certain body parts
while neglecting others. The Pilates Method works by using the muscles
in synergy rather than isolation. It improves postural alignment
and increases coordination resulting in a more effortless and graceful
movement.
Instead of performing many repetitions of the same exercise, each
exercise is performed only a few times but with intense concentration
on form and precision.
The Pilates Method is designed for everyone, young or old, athletic
or sedentary.
