Who says you can’t always have what you want? When
it comes to the hair texture you desire, it is likely the hair you
were born with can be altered to something more suitable to both
your liking and your lifestyle.
I adore curls. Something in the human psyche invariably makes
us want what we don’t have, this is
particularly apparent when it comes to women and our hair texture.
Rare is the woman who comes to
me stating that she loves her curls or her straight hair. More often
than not, it is not the texture itself we
find fault in, but the unmanageability of it. The environment we
live in has a direct impact on our hair
texture, oftentimes resulting in a constant battle, when most of
us have a lot more fun things to do than
fight with our hair.
Fortunately there is hope for us all, mostly with the comeback
of the permanent wave. If you are
gasping at the thought of this being a good idea, you have surely
had a bad experience as a small
child, or you had some very good ones in the Eighties that you look
back on as bad, or both.
Personally I have very good memories from the fashion of the Eighties,
but to elaborate on that is a topic
in itself. The art of permanent waving has come a long way since
then, but even I will readily admit,
so has fashion.
Hairstyles and fashion work hand in hand, one doesn’t exist
without the other. With the return of
extremes of femininity in clothing, we see a direct reflection of
waves and curls in the hair. There is
something about having curls in your hair that just makes you look
and feel like a woman. Don’t believe
me? Without making a permanent decision, try rolling your hair up
and live with that for a while. There
are as many ways to temporarily curl your hair as there are permanent
ones.
The comeback for perms has however been very slow. Hairdressers
have become so accustomed to
blow drying and straightening hair, quite a few declare amnesia
and refuse to re-learn the process.
Therefore it may be wise to conduct a thorough search for your texture
artist, or ask your current
hairdresser to make a recommendation if she isn’t enthusiastic
about the process. It is still a fairly
lengthy ordeal with less than delightful aromatics, but certainly
not enough to wane the enthusiasm
of anyone who is aware of the potentially fantastic outcome.
There is another texture altering phenomena that has recently been
perfected in Asia, and copied
by companies throughout the world. Up until the debut of this particular
straightening treatment,
the most your stylist could successfully guarantee you was to either
remove approximately half the
existing curl from your hair, or remove all the curl risking removing
half the hair from your head!
Like most things that seem truly phenomenal, this new service does
indeed come with a price. The
process has several steps which can take up to several hours, consequently
costing you several large
dollar bills. Most women that have experienced this process feel
it is truly priceless. Like anything that
impacts your image, choose your service provider wisely, and absolutely
find a specialist.
As if all that isn’t good enough news, there is more! Manufacturers
have recently provided for us a wide
array of styling tools and products to help us with our genetically
inherited texture. Did you know that
women actually ironed their hair a just a few decades ago? I mean
they ironed it! Curls were achieved by
wrapping it in rags, and waves commonly came from rolling hair on
cans, of the vegetable sort. Lucky for us,
we now have styling tools such as the ceramic flat iron, curling
iron, and hot rollers in a variety of sizes.
These along with thermal protective products are available in a
variety of locations. Just remember, your
hair is the only accessory we never take off. Have fun with it,
and as always, invest wisely!
